ProvaStep® Wheel Disinfection: Stop Pathogens Hitching a Ride on Your Production Facility

The hidden cross contamination risk nobody is cleaning

In manufacturing facilities, trolleys, pallet trucks and forklifts cross multiple hygiene zones every day. They move through loading bays, chillers, production areas and high-care environments, with their wheels constantly contacting potentially contaminated floor surfaces.

While footwear is routinely managed through boot washes, footbaths and hygiene stations, wheel disinfection is often overlooked. Yet wheels can act as a significant route for the transfer of bacteria and other pathogens, carrying contamination directly into sensitive production areas.

How ProvaStep Works

ProvaStep® is a dry, granular disinfectant containing a blend of oxidising agents and surfactants. The product activates when it comes into contact with small amounts of moisture, including condensation, residual rinse water and everyday traffic through processing areas.

As wheels pass through a treated zone, they collect active granules and distribute them along their route. This creates a practical hygiene barrier that helps reduce the risk of cross-contamination between production zones and supports overall environmental hygiene management.

Protect Wheeled Traffic at Critical Control Points

ProvaStep can be applied wherever wheeled equipment moves between hygiene zones. At high-care entry points, chiller doors and production room entrances, it helps ensure trolley and rack wheels are treated before entering sensitive processing environments. The product can also be broadcast across loading bay thresholds, goods-in areas and low-care to high-care transitions to create an effective sanitation barrier for pallet and pump trucks.

For forklift traffic, ProvaStep can be used at hygiene boundary crossings, production zone transitions and along heavily travelled routes where contamination is most likely to spread. The same product many facilities already use for footwear hygiene at entrances can also be used to protect wheeled traffic, simplifying hygiene management across the site.

Proven Performance Against Foodborne Pathogens

ProvaStep is validated to EN 1276 and EN 13697 standards, delivering 4-5 log reductions in as little as five minutes. It has demonstrated broad-spectrum efficacy against key foodborne pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus.

In one UK ready-to-eat food production facility, implementation of ProvaStep contributed to a reduction in floor-positive Listeria findings from 25% to 2.7% within weeks.

Designed for Busy Manufacturing Environments

Unlike many liquid disinfection systems, ProvaStep is designed to work during active production without disrupting operations.

Key benefits include:

  • Works during production with no downtime required
  • Helps maintain continuous hygiene barriers in high-traffic areas
  • Non-corrosive to plastics, castors, wheels and stainless steel
  • Maintains traction under normal operating conditions and is considered slip-resistant when used as directed
  • Dust-free, easy to implement and requires minimal PPE and training

Because ProvaStep is applied as a dry granular treatment rather than a liquid disinfectant, it helps support safer movement of both personnel and equipment while maintaining effective pathogen control.

Strengthen Your Facility’s Defences Against Cross-Contamination

Wheel disinfection is often the missing link in a facility’s hygiene programme. By targeting wheeled traffic at critical control points, ProvaStep helps reduce the movement of pathogens between production areas and supports environmental monitoring and Listeria control strategies.
